Syllables
A syllable is a part of a word that is made up of one vowel sound.
The word sound is in bold because sometimes two or more vowels work
together to create a single vowel sound. The
following words from the spelling list have only one syllable.
dress glass pass
law plate dunes
stove pipe wells
springs crust
As you can see, many of these words have more than one vowel. For instance,
in the word plate, we see two vowels (the a and the e). The e is silent and
it causes the a to be pronounced as a long a.
Here are some other words that have only one syllable:
fear fresh move
deer boom drain
mail male build
As you can see, many of these words have more than one vowel, BUT they have
only one vowel SOUND!
