The -ite Letter Pattern

This list includes five words which contain the -ite letter pattern. 


	ignite		write		bite

	kite		quite
The list also includes three very similar words which begin with "qu". 

	quite		quiet		quit
Inspect the last three letters of each of these words. 

	microbe		microscope	decompose
You will see that in each case these words end with a vowel-consonant-e pattern. The e at the end of each word causes the vowel in this pattern to be pronounced in its long form (long o or long i, in these examples).
