The ip Letter Pattern

The ip pattern can make two different sounds depending on whether or not the p is followed by an e. Here are some words from the list with the ip letter pattern.

	ship slip trip

	clip ripen pipe

As you know, the e after the p causes the i sound to be pronounced as a long i sound. Otherwise the i has the short i sound. Here are a few more words containing the ip letter pattern:

	ripe stripe strip

	lip rip wipe

Analogies

Analogies are comparisons between word pairs that have the same relationship. Here are three examples:

Mouse is to mice as goose is to geese.

Monday is to week as January is to year.

Listen is to radio as watch is to television.

We can make little riddles out of these simple analogies by leaving off the last word. Here's an example:

Three is to six as four is to _________.

This one could be answered in two ways. If you're thinking that three is three less than six, then you might answer seven. If you're thinking that three is half of six then you might answer eight. The problem with some analogy riddles is that they can be answered in more than one way.
