Analogies
An analogy is a comparison between word pairs that have the same
relationship. Consider these examples:
Table is to kitchen as desk is to classroom.
Honey is to sweet as lemon is to sour.
Apple is to fruit as carrot is to vegetable.
It can be fun to leave out one of the nouns in an analogy and see if you can
figure out what it is:
Hockey is to rink as basketball is to _________.
Hockey is played in a rink. What do you call the playing area in basketball?
The answer is court. So, our completed analogy reads:
Hockey is to rink as basketball is to court.
