The DIS- Prefix
You probably already know a bunch of words that begin with the dis- prefix.
display dispair disagree
dismal dispose dislike
disprove disturb distort
The dis- prefix generally means not or the opposite or absence of something.
This makes the meaning of some of the words listed above clear. Consider
these examples:
dislike - not to like something or someone
disprove - to prove something or someone wrong
disagree - not to agree with someone
Here are some sample sentences in which these words are used.
He dislikes the long drive to the city.
The accusation against him was disproven.
They disagreed about the quickest way to get to the store.
