The DIS- Prefix

You probably already know a bunch of words that begin with the dis- prefix.

	display dispair disagree

	dismal dispose dislike

	disprove	disturb distort

The dis- prefix generally means not or the opposite or absence of something. This makes the meaning of some of the words listed above clear. Consider these examples:

dislike - not to like something or someone

disprove - to prove something or someone wrong

disagree - not to agree with someone

Here are some sample sentences in which these words are used.

He dislikes the long drive to the city.

The accusation against him was disproven.

They disagreed about the quickest way to get to the store.
