The -ed Suffix

A common suffix which you will see added to the end of many words is -ed. Usually -ed is used to create a verb in the past tense. Here are some examples:

	VERB VERB with -ED

	add added
	use used
	drop dropped
	pull pulled
	scratch scratched
	yell yelled
        try tried

You will notice that you don't simply add -ed to the end of each word. In fact, if you study this list carefully you will notice four different rules for adding -ed.

RULE ONE: Just add -ed. Example: pull + ed = pulled

RULE TWO: Just add d. Example: use + ed = used

RULE THREE: Double the last letter and add -ed. Example: drop + ed = dropped

RULE FOUR: Drop the y and add -ied. Example: try + ed = tried
