Subtraction with small numbers can be as easy as counting dots as long as there is a picture to represent the problem. Sometimes it is helpful to draw a picture to help solve a problem. With subtraction problems we draw dots to match the first number and then cross out dots to match the second number. Consider these examples:


You start with 6 and take away 4. How many are left? ANSWER: 2
You start with 9 and take away 4. How many are left? ANSWER: 5
You start with 9 and take away 4. How many are left? ANSWER: 5

NOTE: Draw some pictures like the ones shown above for the student and have the student count the objects (dots in these examples) and figure out the answer to the subtraction problem represented by the pictures.
